Costa Navarino hosted the 2017 PGAs of Europe Annual Congress and International Team Championship ( 04 December 2017 )

Costa Navarino, the prime sustainable destination in the Mediterranean, hosted the 2017 PGAs of Europe Annual Congress and International Team Championship (ITC) on 22-25 November. The event brought 28 Member Countries of the PGAs of Europe together at IAGTO’s ‘European Golf Resort of the Year 2017’, enjoying perfect weather conditions at the destination’s signature golf courses.

The Annual Congress is the Association’s yearly opportunity to bring representatives from its member countries together to share ideas in order to advance their organisations and the level of golf in their respective territories. The sessions included a wide range of speakers and subjects ensuring a strong mix of presentations, discussions and forums.

The ITC involved teams from across the PGAs of Europe’s Member Countries competing over 71 holes on The Dunes Course, the 18-hole golf course at Costa Navarino, designed by golfer Bernhard Langer, former Ryder Cup Captain and US Masters Champion in association with European Golf Design (EGD).

Attendees were also able to experience The Bay Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., during the President’s Challenge Golf friendly matches for delegates. The 18-hole par 71 course, offers spectacular views to the historic Bay of Navarino.

The Westin Resort Costa Navarino hosted both events, culminating in the Gala Awards Dinner supported by Rolex, which brought Congress delegates and ITC competitors together in celebration of the annual award winners and the ITC Champions. Costa Navarino was celebrated for providing a varied and engaging programme of events, outstanding levels of hospitality, service and cuisine, and world class golf courses that were enjoyed in excellent weather.

Costa Navarino’s own wellness team also delivered a golf stretching session aimed at reinvigorating golfers and teaching them simple, yet effective exercises that they can use not only for golf but in daily life.

Ian Randell, Chief Executive of the PGAs of Europe stated: ‘Costa Navarino proved to be a truly outstanding venue for our Annual Congress and International Team Championship. The quality and beauty of the facilities coupled with the support and hospitality shown to our delegates and competitors throughout the whole week has resulted in the feedback received from the leaders and Professionals from some 28 member PGAs being enormously positive’.

Nuno Sepulveda, Golf & Sports Business Development Director for Costa Navarino commented: ‘It was a great honour to host the Annual Congress and International Team Championship of the PGAs of Europe. At Costa Navarino, we are committed to offering a world-class golf experience to our guests and we were glad to introduce to our valuable partners the PGAs of Europe, our signature golf courses in this destination that is fast becoming a favorite among golfers from around the world’.

In the ITC event, the PGA in Ireland cruised to a sensational victory after shooting the lowest rounds of the week, taking the title by an incredible 16 shots.

The International Team Shield event gave those representing a PGA with 100 members or fewer the chance to compete alongside the larger PGAs in the ITC, whilst also enjoying their own competition and prize fund. The PGA of Greece secured their first win in the shield event as well as a record sixth place finish in the overall ITC event.

What I have done…
Growing up, I have been lucky enough to live between Sydney, Hong Kong, France and England, thus have been aware of varying cultures and societies around the world from quite a young age. Inspired by my love for travel, I studied Anthropology alongside Art History at the University of Exeter in the hope of having a deeper understanding of the different cultures and societies around us. Having just moved to London, I am very pleased to be joining the Hills Balfour team!
