Kenya shares high-altitude training secrets & sports tourism highlights ahead of the London Marathon ( 19 April 2017 )

Ahead of the Virgin Money London Marathon this Sunday 23rd April, where in recent years Kenyan athletes have celebrated achievements including winning both the elite men’s and elite women’s races in 2014 and 2016, the Kenya Tourism Board is looks at Iten’s training programmes for aspiring runners as well as highlighting the Lewa’s upcoming Safaricom Marathon.

While Kenya is a popular destination for safari holidays, its beautiful Indian Ocean coastline and a diverse cultural offering, running and sports tourism are often side-lined, but in a corner of western Kenya, elite runners are consistently rising up through the ranks to go on to international success. At an elevation of 2.4km the town of Iten was once Kenya’s best kept secret, but with Olympic champion Mo Farah known to train here and high-altitude training camp programmes becoming more widely available, centres such as the Lornah Kiplagat Camp are developing a growing reputation in the running world.

High Altitude Training Camp in El Doret and Iten, Kenya

Kenya is world-renowned for producing world-class athletes and the destination has the facilities, expert coaches and services in its high-altitude training centres to accommodate holidaymakers seeking to improve their overall fitness or keen runners looking to develop racing performance. Visitors to Kenya can book a running camp itinerary in El Doret and Iten. The camps design training programmes for visitors to experience running at high altitude in order to improve stamina, strength and technique as well as training with local athletes. Lornah Kiplagat, four times Marathon World Champion, is the founder of the Lornah Kiplagat Running Camp in Iten (www.lornah.com) which offers a 400m all-weather tartan track which was launched by UK sports stars Mo Farah and Paula Radcliffe in 2014, a swimming pool, full gym and a Physiotherapy and Injury Clinic. Train in Kenya (www.traininkenya.com) operates two-week running itineraries featuring the Lornah Kiplagat camp which includes full board accommodation in Nairobi, Nakuru and Iten, use of fitness and pool facilities, and transfers.

Safaricom Marathon in Lewa Wildlife Conservancy - 24th June 2017

Those who complete the Virgin Money London Marathon this weekend and are inspired by the accomplishments of this year’s Kenyan runners can look ahead to the summer for the ultimate challenge; the Safaricom Marathon and Half Marathon in Lewa. Taking place this year on 24th June 2017, the marathon is set in Northern Kenya’s beautiful and diverse Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and is one of Kenya’s biggest sporting events, previous participants include Pippa Middleton and Ben Fogle. Organised by Tusk and supported by Safaricom, this fundraising event hosts over 1,000 runners from 20 different countries and is regarded as one of the toughest marathons in the world. Running through some of Kenya’s most amazing landscapes, the marathon and half-marathon combine an element of safari with both a physically and mentally challenging race. Now in its 17th year, the Tusk Safaricom Marathon not only targets professionals but also invites club runners, walkers and amateurs to take part (www.lewa.org/support-lewa/safaricom-marathon).

The Kenya Tourism Board wishes the very best of luck to all participants in this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon, and hopes for incredible results for its world record holders, gold medalists and global champions running on Sunday 23rd April 2017!

TESTIMONIAL

The Times’ fashion department has worked with Hills Balfour on several occasions. They are one of the few travel PR specialists that approach us with creative and innovative ideas for features, news and fashion shoots. I’m  impressed by how their reach extends beyond travel journalism and I’d be more than happy to recommend them to any of my colleagues and  look forward to working with them more in the future.
