Kenya shares high-altitude training secrets & sports tourism highlights ahead of the London Marathon ( 19 April 2017 )

Ahead of the Virgin Money London Marathon this Sunday 23rd April, where in recent years Kenyan athletes have celebrated achievements including winning both the elite men’s and elite women’s races in 2014 and 2016, the Kenya Tourism Board is looks at Iten’s training programmes for aspiring runners as well as highlighting the Lewa’s upcoming Safaricom Marathon.

While Kenya is a popular destination for safari holidays, its beautiful Indian Ocean coastline and a diverse cultural offering, running and sports tourism are often side-lined, but in a corner of western Kenya, elite runners are consistently rising up through the ranks to go on to international success. At an elevation of 2.4km the town of Iten was once Kenya’s best kept secret, but with Olympic champion Mo Farah known to train here and high-altitude training camp programmes becoming more widely available, centres such as the Lornah Kiplagat Camp are developing a growing reputation in the running world.

What I have done…
In summer 2014 I graduated from Oxford Brookes University with a degree in International Tourism Management. During my time at university I had the opportunity to spend my placement year working at Disney World in Orlando, FL; doing anything and everything from working in resorts, organising talent shows and even a stint as Pluto! After spending the last year exploring the world as Cabin Crew for British Airways, I felt it was time to hang up my wings and take on a new adventure here at Hills Balfour. My time at BA has given me a great understanding of the world and its many cultures as well as supplied me with many a weird and wonderful story to tell.
