Angie Sloan, Regional Account Director for Hills Balfour is currently in Kenya leading a group of six tour operators and one journalist for seven nights to experience a little of what this amazing country has to offer.
Here is her first report:-
Smooth overnight flight with Kenya Airways from LHR. Seamless arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport – just 50 minutes from landing and clearing immigration to exiting with luggage. Very impressive re-organisation of the airport following the fire.
We transferred across to Hemingways Nairobi – which is first-class in every way. The hotel opened officially in May 2013 and is a fantastic addition to Kenya’s portfolio of luxury properties. The hotel sits on a site of 10 acres with 45 enormous rooms – 80 sq metre. Each room has its own Butler who will attend to everything you want during your stay including offering to unpack your clothes! Mine was called William and he could not have been more welcoming and helpful.
Hemingways Nairobi reminds me of a countryside retreat – quiet and peaceful and away from the city centre. It’s about a 25 minute drive on a clear day into the city and around 15 minutes to Wilson Airport.
Its close to the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust which provides care for baby elephants and rhino that have been orphaned. It was amazing to see the little babies up close – fortunately we were downwind of the dust and mud they were throwing around. One visitor in pristine white ended up splattered with mud – we couldn’t help but chuckle.
Quick stop for fantastic lunch at the wonderful Talisman restaurant and then onto the Giraffe Centre to get up close and personal with giraffes.
Our first day culminated in a welcome dinner for all markets attending Magical Kenya Trade Expo at the new Villa Rosa Kempinski in the centre of Nairobi.
With participants attending from Australia, Canada, Korea and Turkey it was certainly a multi-national evening with entertainment provided by a local Kenyan choir.
Feels like we have been here a week and we haven’t spent a night yet!
